In this work, the authors show that an aqueous solution of Polyethylene oxide - Polypropylene oxide - Polyethylene oxide (PEO-PPO-PEO) will self-assemble into a lamellar structures in the presence of Light Harvesting Complex II (LHCII). In the absence of LHCII, PEO-PPO-PEO form micelles. Moreover, they show that when a hexachloroplatinate solution is added, LHCII will produce hydrogen gas. Specifically, after 5 light cycles sufficient Pt catalyst has been photo-precipitated to act as electron acceptors, and by the 14th light cycle, 6.4 umol hydrogen / (hour mg Chlorophyll) was observed. H2 production continued for over 100 hours. - A unique iron-sulfur cluster is crucial for oxygen tolerance of a [NiFe]-hydrogenase. Goris, Wait, et al. Nature Chemical Biology, March, 2011.
